Went and visited Craig down at MaxMuscle last week to see how things are progressing with my diet. Granted- I didn't eat that poorly (I think) over the last year, but really refining what goes into my body even more I know is going to make a difference.
After going to see Mark Allen chat on his new book a couple weeks ago, he expanded on a story of how he lived in Boulder near Pearl Street and would go down to the Mrs Fields and get cookies after a long ride- figured he'd burn it off tomorrow and he also deserved it... The last day he did this, then quit cold turkey on the cookies was the day he was coming back from the cookie store and he saw Dave Scott coming back from Alalfas eating Cottage cheese... hum... makes sense.
I believe the biggest change for me has been the reduction in refined sugars. Pretty much the only sugar I eat now is in my Orange Juice, and a bit in my cereals. I've noticed I don't have any real sugar cravings anymore, which is great. I feel stronger on the bike as well as in the pool. I still have good days and off days with getting in enough calories, but in general- I am seeing and feeling improvements in and out of training. I've been keeping a food journal each day which is challenging to judge quantities, but it's becoming easier...
So- with that, Craig shuffled me back to the changing room in the MaxMuscle and proceeded to take his measurements... See data below. Granted- these are only 2 samples- I believe this will fluctuate over the next couple of months- I doubt I will continue to drop like I did this time, but who knows. Everyone notices how they look in the mirror and honestly in December I just was really disappointed in how I looked- stupid, I know, but it makes a difference- carrying 2-5 extra lbs on the bike and run just doesn't work for me. After I met with Craig I went back and was looking at my training volume over the last 4-6 weeks and it's remained relatively consistent, so I know the addition of volume isn't a huge factor in the data below.
Date: 01.09.09
Weight- 165lbs (with clothes)
Lean body mass: 147.51 lbs
Fat Body Mass: 17.49 lbs.
Body Fat %: 10.6 %
Date: 02.13.09
Weight- 167lbs (with clothes)
Lean body mass: 154.54 lbs
Fat Body Mass: 12.46 lbs.
Body Fat %: 7.46 %
Change-
2.0 lbs. Weight
7.04 lbs Lean Muscle,
-5.04lbs Fat body Mass.
Body Fat %: -3.14%
So, yea- I know I was way, way leaner before Kona, so there is still a lot of room for improvement- makes me wonder what my BF% was in October. Again- my diet isn't full of supplements, but I'm eating more in general and the combination of different food groups makes sense. I guess I knew this before, but am more aware of it now.
Thanks Craig...

Solid bodycomp progress dude!
You've quite an elite bodycomp already so it's going to be intresting to see how much you'll fly even more with improvements there!
good job
i think that you and GG should cage fight...forget triathlon, it's for losers.
Jeff,
I read that article and it makes me want to go out and get some cookies. Man, I love Chocolate Chip Cookies, my weak spot.
However, some Girl Scouts asked me to buy some cookies the other day and I told them to take a hike, so maybe my diet is improving.
Nobody ever really knows what a ninja's body fat % is because nobody has ever seen them without their ninja outfit on. Their outfits provide camouflage for deadly and unexpected attacks.
I bet they are shredded though and if you don't believe me you are a liar and need to get a life right now.
Have you ever seen a ninja eat a cheese quesadilla (pronounced correctly as kas-uh-dill-uh)? That's what I thought...
